This One’s on the House!
How much effort is a free drink worth? For UK house duo Freemasons, an almost 20-year music career would be the answer.
Freemasons is formed of two producers, Russell Small and James Wiltshire. The pair had already enjoyed success independently in the 90s dance scene, but in the early 2000s were looking to create a new group.
With this in mind, they headed where any musician would – to their local pub. There, the Karaoke was in full swing, and on comes Amanda Wilson. The duo were blown away, and after a small chat, she was set to be the vocalist on some of the Freemasons’ biggest hits.
Only one piece of the puzzle remained – they needed a name.
Once again sitting in their local, the pair was brainstorming when the landlord offered them a deal: if the track they were making got to #1, he’d give them free drinks for the rest of their lives.
One handshake later, and what else could the duo name themselves after other than the pub that had given them their singer and such an enticing deal: The Freemasons Tavern. Since striking that deal, the duo has had an astounding music career, with six Top 20 hits in the UK, a Grammy nomination and more.
Unfortunately, their biggest hit, Love on My Mind featuring Amanda Wilson, peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. So, despite working on some of the biggest club anthems in the past 20 years, no free drinks for this dance duo.
